DAFFODIL’S STORY

Daffodil

A Good Samaritan found a cat that had been hit by a car in the middle of the road.  She presented the cat mid-morning for treatment to a veterinarian who was a VETEGA participating veterinarian.  VETEGA agreed to pay up to $300 for care for the cat.  The Good Samaritan was unable to offer any additional funds towards treatment of the cat.

On physical exam, the cat was a young adult intact female domestic long-haired breed, post-lactation, who was disoriented and agitated, ataxic (wobbly walking), with a head tilt to the left, nystagmus (abnormal eye movements), pale mucous membranes, panting, and had lacerations over the back of the skull and on the left side of her head.  An intravenous (IV) catheter was placed and shock dose IV fluids were started.  After 30 minutes, “Daffodil” was improving and was sitting up on her belly.  She had rapid breathing but was not panting and still had head ticking and a head tilt.  IV fluids were decreased.  After 1&1/2 hours, the IV fluids were discontinued and mannitol was given slow IV then followed with a bolus dose of furosemide. This treatment helps to decrease swelling of the brain.  IV fluids were restarted later.

Over the next few days, Daffodil gradually improved to the point that she could eat and drink on her own then IV fluids were discontinued.  Over the next 3 weeks, she gradually relearned how to walk and use the litter box but has a persistent head tilt and some ataxia. No owner was ever identified.  Daffodil was later spayed and vaccinated and then adopted.

Cost for first 5 days of hospitalization: $384.34 after a discount of the emergency visit by the participating veterinarian.  VETEGA paid $300 and the vet did the additional boarding and follow up care until adoption (approximately 5 months).
