GROUCHO MARX’S
STORY
A Good Samaritan found a kitten hit by a car in the middle of the road. She presented the kitten for treatment to a veterinarian who was a VETEGA participating veterinarian. VETEGA agreed to $300 for care for the cat. The Good Samaritan was unable to offer any additional funds towards treatment of the cat.
On physical exam, the kitten was estimated to be 6 months old, bright, alert and responsive, purring, hypothermic (low body temperature), white mucous membranes, had a closed left femoral (hind leg) fracture and a large skin laceration medial to lateral across the left stifle (knee). “Groucho Marx” (named for his distinctive mustache) was stabilized over the weekend and the laceration temporarily closed with skin staples. Two days later, radiographs of Groucho Marx showed a transverse mid-shaft femoral fracture. He was anesthetized and the laceration and femoral fracture were repaired and an orchiectomy (neuter) was performed. Groucho Marx recovered very well and was easily adopted out and recovered fully.
Cost of treatment: $1515.69.
VETEGA paid: $300.
AAHA Helping Pets Fund paid $200.
Adopter paid $100.
Donation of veterinary services: $915.69
Groucho Marx’s case study was presented at the national conference for the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in March 2007 for their Helping Pets Fund. Groucho’s story was also highlighted in a local Vermont paper.
