JACOB’S
STORY
“Jacob” was a 4 month old, intact male, Dachshund that was given to the owner by a family member. Jacob had no vaccine or deworming history. Jacob’s littermate was just recently diagnosed with Parvovirus infection and had been hospitalized.
Jacob presented to another veterinarian for vomiting. On physical exam, Jacob was flinching on abdominal palpation (suspected due to abdominal pain). An in-house Parvovirus test was run and it was a strong positive. The veterinarian discussed recommended treatment with the owner, including IV fluids, supportive meds for nausea and vomiting, antibiotics to try to prevent secondary bacterial infections and a possible plasma transfusion. If needed, a plasma transfusion would help stabilize his blood pressure and give him some needed antibodies from the plasma donor to help fight the infection.
The owner had some serious financial constraints. Fortunately, the veterinarian that she brought Jacob to was a VETEGA participating veterinarian. The vet’s staff did grant applications to VETEGA and to American Animal Hospital Association’s Helping Pets Fund and both grants were approved. Jacob was hospitalized and treatment began. Jacob was hospitalized 4 days until he was recovered enough to go home. While Jacob was hospitalized, it was learned that his littermate had to be put to sleep for her infection. Jacob continued to do well and was seen two weeks later for a routine puppy visit and to start his vaccine series. At that visit, Jacob had gained over 1 pound and was full of life.
