ROCKY’S STORY

Rocky

“Rocky”, a 2-year-old neutered male Border Collie Mix was presented for chronic sneezing, trouble breathing, a bump on the nose and occasional nosebleeds.   This was non-responsive to a course of antibiotics done at a previous veterinary practice.  Rocky was started on another course of antibiotics, plus an anti-inflammatory dose of prednisone.  A rhinoscopy was scheduled.

Rocky represented 9 days later with a fever, multiple draining lesions over his body, bleeding from left nostril, toe-touching lameness left front, and pale and slightly tacky mucous membranes. Diagnostics performed:  Chem. Panel (checks liver and kidney status and electrolytes, blood sugar, etc.), CBC (Complete Blood Count for red blood cell counts, white blood cell counts, and platelets counts), Heartworm/Lyme/Ehrlichia combination test, radiographs (x-rays), and cytology of draining lesions (looking at the cells from the lesions under a microscope).  Diagnosis: systemic blastomycosis.  This is a type of fungal infection that is often fatal if untreated.  Blastomycosis is a fungal organism that lives in the soil in the northeast.  Rocky was started on IV fluids, tramadol (a pain reliever), antibiotics, and itraconazole (an anti-fungal agent).  Rocky was discharged after 2 days of hospitalization.

Treatment costs to this point: >$1000.00.  Rocky needed to be treated with itraconazole for 3 months.  The estimated cost for itraconazole therapy for the 3 months:  up to $1000.00.  The owner applied for a grant from VETEGA and was approved for $300.  A local pharmacist supplied the needed medication at a discount to the veterinarian and VETEGA reimbursed the veterinarian.  All VETEGA’s funds are paid directly to veterinarians.  Rocky gradually improved and now has fully recovered.
