SKINNY MINNIE’S STORY

Skinny Minnie

A Good Samaritan found a cat that appeared to be injured on the side of the highway at a car pull out area.  The cat was presented to a VETEGA participating veterinarian.

On physical exam, the cat was a geriatric spayed female, bright, alert and responsive, had severe periodontal disease with multiple missing teeth, was emaciated, with coarse thin fur and fleas, and had a left rear lameness which was a chronic non-union femoral fracture (a fracture that the ends never healed together) that was not painful to palpation.  She also had a small chronic traumatic abdominal wall hernia.

The cat was boarded for several days while an attempt to find the owner was made.  The owner was not found and VETEGA was approached to do geriatric diagnostics.  VETEGA agreed up to $300.  Diagnostics performed: CBC (Complete Blood Count for red blood cell counts, white blood cell counts, and platelets counts), Chem. Panel (checks liver and kidney status and electrolytes, blood sugar, etc.), T4 (thyroid test), and blood pressure.  “Skinny Minnie” was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and an employee of the veterinarian donated methimazole medication to treat her thyroid condition.  Skinny Minnie was treated and follow up bloodwork was performed until her hyperthyroidism was controlled.  Skinny Minnie blossomed and gained weight and hair coat quality improved with time.  Skinny Minnie was adopted out 2 months after presentation.  A month later, Skinny Minnie was no longer skinny and had a dental prophylaxis with extractions and the abdominal wall hernia repaired.  Minnie did well her in new home but was diagnosed with cancer a few months after her adoption and she passed away about 9 months after her adoption.

Cost of treatment: $484.13.
VETEGA paid $300.
Adopter paid: $75.
Donation of veterinary services $109.13 plus boarding care during the months before adoption.
